The answer turns out to be GNURoot which allows Linux to run under a false root. To cut a long story shortish - the answer is YES! I wondered whether I could run Linux on an un-rooted android box and then install LMS on that. In order to keep the ability to use 4k HDR on Amazon TV the box could not be rooted which seemed a bit of a drawback. Recently I bought an all-singing and dancing Nvidia Shield TV and my thoughts turned to running LMS on it. I wanted to use my android box to run LMS but received wisdom seemed to be that this was not possible. As a consequence I haven't been switching on my noisy Microserver and so not using my squeezebox. I understand that there are difference in the Raspberry pi VPN software and the Nighthawk software. I do not have any ports forwarded on the router. I am able to connect to the files on my LMS server (using file management tools like File Expert) and also 'puTTY' in (using Connectbot), but when I try to access the LMS server page (.nnn:9000) on the internet, or through any apps such as Orange Squeeze, I get a "Connection error, unexpected end of stream on connection). I set up VPN on there using my dyndns account. I recently upgrade my router to a Netgear Nighthawk r7000. Click on Orange Squeeze, select my server (.nnn) and I was set to go. I was using a Raspberry pi and "Open VPN for Android" on my Samsung Galaxy. (sudo cp /data/plugins/music_service/squeezelite/unit/squeezelite.Previously I was able to connect to my LMS through VPN on my android phone while I was on 3G, 4G, or another wireless network. Copy the squeezelite service to the service directory.Change the permissions to of install.sh (chmod 744 install.sh). Navigate to the folder where you have extracted the files to (cd /data/plugins/music_service/squeezelite).Hint: extract the archive locally and use winscp (or alternative) to upload the content to the mentioned folder Extract it to /data/plugins/music_service/squeezelite.Download the zip archive from GitHub - Saiyato/volumio-squeezelite-plugin: Volumio plugin to install and configure a Squeezelite client.Here is the tested procedure (thanks to Emil Ceraceanu for providing me this!). Of course if you access LMS from your browser, Volumio/Squeezelite does not appear among destinations. Result is kind of encouraging, the plugin appears installed after completion, however if you select “Settings” then the config page appears empty with just “No Configuration Available”. In the meanwhile I had the opportunity through Emil (who is partecipating actively in the Volumio Enthusiasts Group on FB) to get the following step by step procedure.
